AkerBP select the 7″ AVS for their Valhall F11 well. This was a sidetracked well that has tremendous stick / slip. The AVS was run in the 8 1/2″ BHA for drilling out the 9 5/8″ liner shoetrack and drilling ahead. The AVS was run successfully in Splitflow mode but suffered a problem when trying to go into Bypass for POH. Later investigation showed the MEMS gyro PCB had suffered a micro fracture meaning the gyro, which reads RPM was making spurious readings. The micro fracture was due to an induced stress i.e slight bending when the AVS was being assembled in IDT’s assembly room. Procedures have been changed to ensure this does not happen again and the introduction of the V2 software, which allows downlink via multiple methods including pump cycles, pump duration and differential pressure, means a downlink can be made even if the Gyro fails.
Archer and IDT sign a Global collaboration contract for marketing and logistical support. Archer are a global oil service company with a superb and diverse product lines ranging from Modular rigs, speciality well abandonment plugs & packers, well bore cleaning and electric wireline. In addition they have a fantastic R&D and technology centre where IDT technology can be potentially deployed into many new developments. Through this agreement, IDT are already making inroads into the Middle East with presentation having been delivered to ADNOC and other Operators in the region.

Mark Booth, IDT Senior Development Engineer shows Malcolm the DEAP V2 software and runs through the activation process on the test bench. A full function test on the flow loop was conducted shifting the AVS into all its positions successfully.
The MK4 7″ AVS has completed its design, manufacture and build and is now ready for extensive testing on the C&W Flowloop at our Sheffield facility. The major differences of the MK4 to previous versions is the overall packaging which has reduced the length by over 1m. We have a revised selector ring assembly, pre fabricated encapsulated wiring harness, improved electronics increasing battery efficiency, numerous mechanical enhancements to improve efficiency and reliability. In addition, the tool can now be programmed with the V2 software from a single external access port. This delivers reduced service and maintenance costs. A huge thanks to the OGTC and Lundin Energy for their support in delivering the MK4.
Ray Proctor of RPG spent several days at our Sheffield facility studying the engineering design, metallurgy and manufacturing process as part of an independent design review for the AVS and DEAP tools. I am pleased to say that we passed with no issues and were awarded a pass certificate.
Halliburton selected the AVS as part of their Directional drilling BHA for a horizontal test well drilled at Ullrig in Stavanger. 10 3/4″ casing was set horizontally with a 12 deg/30m build up section. There was then a planned 9.5″ horizontal hole section. The AVS was picked up and drilled out the shoetrack with no issues. A remedial cement job on the shoe to get the required shoe strength, was then conducted. the AVS was racked back in the derrick for a week before being picked up again to drill out cement. The BHA became stuck inside the shoe with cement debris and took 4 hrs to jar free. The AVS was downlinked in less than 6 mins and opened to Splitflow position to jet the shoe track area. This was done successfully with no issues. A great test of the AVS function and integrity. When the log from the ASV was downloaded it showed in excess of 50g shocks (max we can record) but perfect functioning of the tool.
Exciting news as the OGTC, Aberdeen and Lundin Energy, Oslo part fund development of the smaller 7″ AVS electronic multi position circulating valve including the V2 Software. At the core of the AVS is the Downhole Electronic Activation Platform or DEAP that provides the unique ability to activate any downhole tool using any of its sensors. MEMS gyro, Accelerometers, proximity sensors and pressure sensors. The V2 software allows the tool to be programmed with multiple options for downlinking.
IDT plan to have the first of the 7″ AVS MK4 tools for trial with Lundin by the end of 2019.
The Luno 2 exploration well drilled by Lundin Energy with the COSL Innovator semi submersible, was the latest trial for the 8″ AVS electronic multi position circulating valve. This was the latest MK3c version with revised seals and upgraded internals. The tool was programmed to respond to a simple downlink consisting of a reference RPM followed by a pump cycle sequence. Downlinks take around 6 minutes to complete. The AVS BHA was run to 1100m, the downlinks sent to change into Splitflow and then to Bypass. The downlinks were received but due to a sticking piston, later found out to be excessive seal friction, the tool did not start functioning until later in the sequence. This issue has now been revised and Lundin signed a 2 year contract with IDT that will allow live well testing of the smaller 7″ MK4 AVS when it becomes available at the end of 2019

The AVS will be used during the P&A of an exploration well to pump and clean out cement. The Operator is keen to see how the downlinking system works. This is the MK3c tool with upgraded internals and software.
DQE Rig 51 in Kurdistan and the 8” AVS undergoing surface checks prior to the run
The AVS was selected by a Norwegian Operator drilling an exploration well in Kurdistan. The brief was to run the AVS below the MWD tool which only the AVS can do and jet a stabiliser that is prone to pack off, making pulling out the hole very difficult. After a 3 week transit across Europe and through Turkey the AVS eventually arrived at the rigsite. The tools were plugged into and checked electronically and function tested. Everything checked out even in the 49 degC surface heat! The AVS was run in the hole and shallow functioned perfectly. Downlinking took only 6 minutes. Drilling 12 ¼” hole commenced until 1400m. The BHA was POH with the AVS in Bypass position to clean up the well rapidly and jet the stabiliser. The BHA came out the hole with no overpulls and the stabiliser was perfectly clean. It took another 5 weeks before the tools were back in Sheffield but overall a fantastic first trial for the AVS. Since then the tools have been stripped down and minor mechanical upgrades made and the software updated to ensure even quicker downlinks.
